Thing is, South Africa’s got tons of these roles going, especially in Joburg and Cape Town. From what I’ve seen guys jump in for the steady pay and the fact that you don’t always need a fancy degree. But it’s not just standing around all day like people think.
Pay starts around eight to twelve grand a month for beginners. Night shifts pay a bit better though. Honestly speaking I know mates who cleared fifteen after a year or two once they got their grades up.
How do you even get in
First thing you need that PSIRA card. No card, no job. Simple as that. You do a short course, write the exam and you’re set. Costs a few hundred rand but it opens doors fast.
And don’t skip the medical either. Most companies want you fit enough to walk patrols or handle a bit of rough stuff if it comes up. I’d say get that sorted before you start applying everywhere.
Look, bigger firms like Fidelity and G4S post new openings all the time. Smaller local outfits sometimes pay quicker and treat you more like a person too. Depends what you’re after really.

Real talk, networking helps more than you’d guess. Chat to other guards at the sites you visit. They hear about vacancies before the ads go up.
Stuff that actually matters on the job
Shifts can be long. Twelve hours is normal and you might work weekends. That’s the trade-off for the money coming in steady. Some guys love the quiet nights, others hate missing family time.
Training doesn’t stop after the first course either. Companies send you for fire fighting or first aid refreshers now and then. Keeps things fresh and looks good on your CV when you want to move up.
Here’s the thing though – theft and bribery still pop up on some sites. Keep your head down and follow the rules. It saves headaches later.
Not great when management changes and suddenly your overtime gets cut. Happens more than it should. Ask around about the company culture before you sign anything.
Where the work actually shows up
Online is obvious – Careers24, Indeed SA, company websites. But walk-ins still work in smaller towns. Print a few CVs and just go knock.
Facebook groups for security workers in your province drop daily leads too. Join a couple. People post when a contract starts next week and they need bodies quick.
Once you’ve got a year or two under your belt doors open for supervisor spots. That’s where the real money starts showing up. Big difference from the entry level stuff.
