As per the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, the adult minimum wage for welders in New Zealand is NZ$25.00 per hour from 1 April 2026. Welders on the starting rate receive this amount for the first 12 months with no overtime loading below 40 hours per week. After 12 months the rate increases to NZ$26.50 per hour under the same source.
Q What visa is required for overseas welders to work in New Zealand in 2026?
As per Immigration New Zealand, overseas welders need a Straight to Residence Visa or Accredited Employer Work Visa valid for up to 3 years starting 2026. Applicants must hold a job offer from an accredited employer paying at least NZ$29.66 per hour. The visa processing time is 20 working days with a fee of NZ$1,210.
Q What qualifications and experience are needed to qualify as a welder in New Zealand?
As per the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, welders require a New Zealand Certificate in Welding Level 3 or 4 plus 2 years documented experience. Applicants must also hold a current AS/NZS 2980 welding qualification issued after 1 January 2025. No applications are accepted without both the certificate and experience logbook.
