I've been chatting with a few mates who moved to New Zealand for work and the stories about welder jobs keep coming up. Construction's booming in places like Auckland and Christchurch. Mining and ship repair need skilled hands too.
Thing is demand stays steady because not enough locals are getting into the trade. Pay's decent once you land the right gig.
Best spots for welding work
Auckland has the most openings from what I've seen. Christchurch follows close behind after the rebuilds. Hamilton and Wellington pop up now and then with factory roles.
But smaller towns near the mines or ports can surprise you with higher rates. Less competition there.

Honestly speaking some of these pay better than the city jobs if you're okay living rural for a bit.
How much do they actually pay
Starting welders pull around 55k to 70k NZD. With a few years experience you hit 80k easy. The top guys on big projects clear over 100k with overtime.
Rates jump for TIG or underwater certs. Not gonna lie the overtime is where the real money sits.
What you need to get hired
Most places want a trade cert or apprenticeship proof. MIG and stick welding skills are basic. Add structural or pressure pipe work and you stand out fast.
Safety tickets like working at heights help a lot. Drug tests come with almost every site job too.
And if you're coming from overseas the visa route matters. Skilled migrant category is the usual path but check current lists first.
Finding the gigs
Seek and Trade Me are where Kiwis post most roles. LinkedIn works for the bigger companies. Word of mouth still gets you in faster though.
Recruiters who specialise in trades can line up interviews quick. I've seen friends get calls within days of signing up.
Don't skip the union sites either. They sometimes have the better paid contracts.
