Job Description
Perform repairs and/or product improvement welding updates on steel structures for all-terrain and crawler cranes and other components of Liebherr Ehingen products throughout the United States. Fit, weld, and repair steel structures and machine components on above mentioned machines in accordance with manufacturer specifications working with highly sensitive high strength steel. Organize job-sites to perform repairs and / or modifications on his/ her own in a clean and safe manner. Fit, weld and build steel fabrications as needed for and around the workshop as directed. This job description reflects management’s assignment of essential functions; it does not prescribe or restrict the tasks that may be assigned.

Responsibilities
β€’ Level I
β€’ Assist senior welders with crane repair and fabrication work
β€’ Perform basic SMAW and GMAW welding under supervision
β€’ Clean, prep, and grind materials before and after welding
β€’ Read simple blueprints and welding symbols
β€’ Operate basic shop equipment and hand tools
β€’ Maintain clean and safe work areas
β€’ Follow all company safety requirements
β€’ Learn crane structural components and repair procedures
β€’ Level II
β€’ All Level I duties, plus:
β€’ Perform basic structural repairs with minimal supervision
β€’ Weld carbon steel components using GMAW, SMAW, and gouging processes
β€’ Repair cracks, worn sections, and damaged crane assemblies
β€’ Read drawings and welding procedures independently
β€’ Conduct basic fit-up and layout work
β€’ Operate grinders, torches, plasma cutters, and fabrication equipment
β€’ Assist senior welders on larger scale repair jobs
β€’ Complete quality inspections on finished welds
β€’ Operate overhead cranes and rigging equipment safely
β€’ Documentation of performed work (Service Report, Photos, Expense Report, Timesheet).
β€’ Responsible for the proper storage/handling of steel tubes, plates and lacings.
β€’ Perform damage inspections with assistance
β€’ Responsible for the proper and safe storage/handling of High/Low pressure gas tanks/bottles.
β€’ Level III
β€’ All Level II duties, plus:
β€’ Perform complex structural crane repairs and rebuilds
β€’ Weld critical load-bearing crane components
β€’ Interpret metric engineering drawings and repair procedures
β€’ Perform gouging, crack repairs, and structural reinforcement
β€’ Train and mentor lower-level welders
β€’ Knowledge in performing NDT
β€’ Operate overhead cranes and rigging equipment safely
β€’ Work with engineering to resolve repair challenges
β€’ Perform field welding repairs as required
β€’ Successfully completes all required weld tests and maintains ability to perform welding practices.
β€’ Prepares for travelling to jobsites as required (Tooling, Material, travel organization, etc…).
β€’ Perform damage inspections with accuracy
β€’ Mentors Levels 1-2
β€’ Level IV (Curriculum Development Team Lead)
β€’ All Level III duties, plus:
β€’ Lead repair welding crews on crane rebuild projects
β€’ Ensure compliance with welding procedures and quality standards
β€’ Coordinate with managers and customers
β€’ Ability to perform difficult structural and component repairs
β€’ Review repair scopes and material requirements
β€’ Conduct weld inspections and documentation reviews
β€’ Mentors Levels 1-3
Competencies
β€’ Level I
β€’ 0–1 years of welding or fabrication experience
β€’ Technical school or welding certification preferred
β€’ Basic understanding of welding safety and shop practices
β€’ Basic weld quality
β€’ Safe tool handling
β€’ Ability to follow instructions
β€’ Basic measuring and layout skills
β€’ Level II
β€’ 1–2 years of welding and fabrication experience
β€’ Experience in heavy equipment, structural steel, or crane manufacturing preferred
β€’ AWS D1.1 Certified Welder
β€’ Demonstrated proficiency as Level I, plus:
β€’ Ability to pass visual weld inspections
β€’ Understanding of heat distortion and weld sequencing
β€’ Moderate blueprint interpretation skills
β€’ Ability to work independently on standard repairs
β€’ Level III
β€’ 3–5 years of heavy structural welding experience
β€’ Extensive crane, heavy equipment, or industrial repair experience
β€’ Demonstrated proficiency as Level II, plus:
β€’ Advanced GMAW/SMAW welding proficiency
β€’ Ability to weld in multiple positions
β€’ Strong understanding of metallurgy and preheat requirements
β€’ Ability to identify structural defects and repair solutions
β€’ Level IV
β€’ 5+ years of structural welding and crane repair experience
β€’ Leadership or crew lead experience preferred
β€’ Demonstrated proficiency as Level III plus:
β€’ Expert-level structural welding ability
β€’ Strong leadership and communication skills
β€’ Advanced blueprint and fitting abilities
β€’ Additional Requirements:
β€’ Travel domestically and internationally up to 80% of the time
β€’ Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver license, T.W.I.C. card and passport.
β€’ Ability to work overtime as well as on weekends or on call duty.
