JOB TITLE: Food Rescue Driver

HOURS: Part-Time, Saturdays and Sundays (mornings); Weekdays, as available

PAY RATE: $15/hour to start

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION: Second Servings is Houston’s only prepared and perishable food rescue organization. We are building a healthier community by providing access to nutritious that would otherwise go to waste. Second Servings picks up unserved and unsold food from retailers, distributors, manufacturers, etc. and delivers it, for free, the same day to 150 approved nonprofit sites (such as soup kitchens, low-income housing, shelters, and others.) Since Second Servings began operations in 2015, we have rescued over 20 million pounds of food, valued at more than $150 million, from over 400 food donors. POSITION SUMMARY: You will be responsible for collecting and loading perishable and nonperishable food from food businesses into our refrigerated vans, and delivering it to assigned nonprofit recipient sites. As the face of our organization, you need to be friendly and respectful, dependable, and committed to our mission of helping our community’s needy, while reducing food waste. You will be part of our team of dedicated part-time drivers and volunteers who make the job really fun and the work very gratifying.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Collects food from participating food donors (distributors, retailers, etc.) and delivers food promptly to scheduled nonprofit sites. Modifications may be made throughout the day.
• Contacts key staff at donor and recipient locations to ensure smooth pick-ups and deliveries and communicates any delays or issues.
• Is very responsive to office staff, and communicates any delivery issues promptly.
• Records all pickups and deliveries in Salesforce, our Cloud-based inventory tracking system, on your cell phone.
• Develops and maintains excellent working relationships with food donors, recipients, and Second Servings team members and volunteers.
• Ensures that the product being donated follows food safety guidelines, and refuses donations if the product doesn't meet stated criteria. (We will provide food safety certification training)
• Communicates clearly and effectively.
• Meets periodically with Supervisor to provide updates and review any issues.
• Follows all TXDOT and company regulations as they relate to company vehicles and general safety.
• Maintains the vehicle’s cleanliness, including washing periodically.
• Practices safe and lawful driving and parking at all times.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Committed to our mission; friendly, flexible, and patient
• Excellent driving record, with a valid Texas Class C (standard) drivers’ license
• Able to drive a refrigerated van safely, with knowledge of Houston geography and ability to navigate using a GPS
• Able to provide great customer service, with a positive attitude and strong desire to help the community
• Knowledge of, or ability to learn, Salesforce, to track food rescues via phone app
• Able to speak and write English clearly; bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus
• Able to pass a background check and drug test
• Previous customer service, social service, foodservice, or delivery experience a plus
• Authorized to work in the U.S. without restrictions
• Able to adapt to changes within the day’s schedule
• Able to work cooperatively with other staff and volunteers
• Have, or able to obtain, a safe food handling license (such as ServSafe)
• Have reliable transportation to get to work on time consistently

Physical Abilities Required:
• Able to perform moderate to heavy physical labor (lift up to 50 lbs.)
• Able to occasionally work in refrigerated areas (cooler and freezer) for very brief periods of time
• Able to stand, walk, sit, use hands, reach, climb stairs, stoop, kneel, climb in and out of vehicle, speak and hear clearly.
