The Ministry of Manpower requires employers to pay welders on work permits a minimum basic salary of SGD 2,800 per month from 1 January 2026 in the marine sector. Overtime after 44 hours weekly must be paid at 1.5 times the hourly rate, with a mandatory housing allowance of SGD 200 monthly if accommodation is not provided. This applies to all new and renewed work permits issued after 31 December 2025.

Applicants for welder work permits must hold at least 2 years of relevant experience plus a valid 6G welding certification issued before the application date. The Ministry of Manpower verifies this through the work permit application system effective 2026, rejecting any submission without proof of certification from approved training centres. No exceptions are granted for entry-level candidates.

Employers must submit the applicant's passport, 6G welding certificate, employment contract showing SGD 2,800 minimum salary, and medical report dated within 3 months via the MOM work permit portal. The Ministry of Manpower processes complete applications within 7 working days as of 2026, with incomplete submissions returned immediately. All documents require English translation if originally in another language.

Welders work a maximum of 44 hours per week under the Employment Act, with overtime capped at 72 hours monthly and paid at 1.5 times the rate from 2026. The Ministry of Manpower mandates 14 days of paid annual leave after the first year of service, increasing to 16 days after 3 years. Rest days must be provided at least once every 7 days.
