Job Purpose

The Welder is responsible for fusing metal components and other metal parts together for construction and/or fabrication.

Responsibilities
• Displays a commitment to Waiward’s incident-free vision, values, and culture.
• Read blueprints and specifications.
• Fuse metal components using the SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, and MCAW process.
• Grind, stamp, cut and drill material.
• Operate tools and equipment including overhead cranes, oxy-acetylene torches, gouging equipment and sub arc welding machines.
• Demonstrate a willingness to learn and ask questions.
• Consistently complete tasks with minimal errors, rejections and NCR’s.
• Ensure that all non-conformances are reported and that the shop, where applicable, maintains the integrity of the company’s ISO-9001 registration.
• Attend daily toolbox meetings.
• Complete housekeeping tasks.
• Follow work schedules.
• Read, understand and comply with all established procedures including Waiward’s safety policies and rules, safe work practices, procedures for machinery and equipment and complete any documentation as required.
• Take reasonable care and cooperate with the employer to protect the health and safety of themselves and their co-workers.
• Participate in the HSE Safety Incentive Program by completing an SI card on a weekly basis.
• Adhere to all Company PPE standards, ensuring appropriate personal protective equipment is worn at all times.
• Report personal injuries, no matter how minor, and obtain medical attention as required.
• Willing to work overtime when needed.
• May perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
• Must be a Registered Apprentice or an Alberta-Certified Journeyperson that holds a valid recognized credential, or possess the skills and knowledge expected of a Journeyperson.
• CWB Welding Qualification Certification’s (SMAW/FCAW/GMAW).
• Demonstrates a solid understanding of reading blueprints both in metric and imperial.
• Basic and Advanced Rigging Course is an asset.
• FLHA Training is an asset.
• Certified Overhead Crane Certification is an asset (can be internally delivered).
• Ability to lift up to 45 pounds.
• Respirator Mask Fit Testing Required.
• WHMIS.

Working Conditions

The incumbent is required to work in the fabrication shop with moderate noise and numerous hazardous fumes.

Physical Requirements

The incumbent is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: viewing weld specifications for extended periods of time; and extensive reading. The incumbent is also required to stand and sit for extended periods of time and will require good physical attributes for walking on uneven ground, climbing, confined space entry, limited lifting, and sitting.
