As per the Government of Canada, the general minimum wage for cleaning staff in Ontario is $17.75 per hour effective January 1 2026 with overtime at 1.5 times the rate after 44 hours weekly. Cleaning staff in unionized building services must receive this rate plus vacation pay of 4% on gross earnings.

As per Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, international applicants need a valid work permit under the Temporary Foreign Worker Program with a Labour Market Impact Assessment approved before January 2026. Processing takes 8-16 weeks and requires proof of job offer from a Canadian employer registered with the program.

As per Employment and Social Development Canada, no formal education is required but applicants must demonstrate 6 months of paid cleaning experience within the last 3 years. Safe food handling certification is mandatory for roles in healthcare or food facilities starting 2026.

As per the Government of Canada, applicants must submit a completed SIN application, valid passport, and two references from prior employers dated within 12 months. A current police vulnerable sector check issued no earlier than 6 months before the application date is also mandatory.
