Job Description

We are seeking a Shunt Driver / Ultra Heavy Vehicle Driver to be responsible for safely operating ultra-heavy vehicles such as multi-axle trucks, tankers, low-bed trailers, heavy haulage trucks, and specialized transport equipment. The role involves transporting oversized, hazardous, or high-value cargo while complying with all traffic laws, safety regulations, and company policies.

Key Responsibilities:

Vehicle Operation
• Operate ultra-heavy vehicles (UHV) in various conditions and terrains.
• Manoeuvre long or oversized loads with precision.
• Ensure correct coupling and uncoupling of trailers.
• Use specialized equipment (winches, chains, ratchets, hydraulic ramps, etc.) safely.

Cargo Handling
• Load and offload cargo following safe handling procedures.
• Secure loads using appropriate restraints to prevent shifting or damage.
• Transport hazardous materials when required (if certified).
• Verify cargo documentation, weight limits, and permits.

Safety & Compliance
• Adhere to all traffic laws, transport regulations, and company safety protocols.
• Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections.
• Report defects, mechanical issues, or safety concerns immediately.
• Comply with DOT/RTTA/MoT or local authority driving standards.
• Follow fatigue management rules and maintain safe driving hours.

Documentation & Reporting
• Maintain accurate logbooks, delivery notes, trip sheets, and fuel records.
• Complete inspection checklists and incident reports.
• Ensure all transport permits and vehicle documentation are valid.

Customer Service
• Interact professionally with clients and site personnel.
• Coordinate with dispatchers to meet delivery schedules.
• Provide updates regarding delivery status or delays.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

Someone with:
• Grade 12
• Valid Ultra Heavy Vehicle License
• Minimum 3–5 years’ experience in heavy or ultra-heavy transport.
• Experience driving low-bed trailers, flatbeds, tankers, or oversized equipment. • Knowledge of road safety rules and heavy-vehicle regulations.
• Ability to read maps, GPS systems, and transport documents.
• Physically fit and capable of handling heavy loads and long hours.

Skills & Capabilities
• Excellent driving and manoeuvring skills.
• Strong awareness of safety procedures.
• Ability to work independently and under pressure.
• Good communication and time-management skills.
• Mechanical aptitude is an advantage.

Work Environment
• Long-distance or cross-border driving.
• Variable work schedules (day/night shifts).
• Outdoor work in various weather conditions.
• May require weekend or emergency call-out availability.
