Job Title: Semi-Skilled Plastic Welder

Department: Fabrication / Assembly

Reports To: Welding Supervisor

Employment Type: Part-time, Hourly
Job Summary

We are looking for a motivated Semi-Skilled Plastic Welder to join our fabrication team. In this role, you will assist senior plastic welders in the assembly and repair of thermoplastic components (such as tanks, ductwork, linings, and piping). You will be responsible for basic welding operations, surface preparation, and equipment setup. The ideal candidate has a basic understanding of heat welding principles and a strong mechanical aptitude.
Key Responsibilities
• Preparation: Clean, bevel, and fit plastic components (Polypropylene, PVC, HDPE, PVDF) prior to welding.
• Basic Welding: Perform socket fusion welding, electro-fusion welding & butt fusion welding as well as flat and simple fillet welds using hot air guns, extrusion welders, and hand rods under the guidance of a certified welder.
• Equipment Setup: Turn on, calibrate temperature settings, and test air flow on welding equipment to ensure proper adhesion.
• Quality Checks: Inspects welds for common visual defects (burn marks, lack of fusion, voids) and reports any issues to the supervisor.
• Fixture Use: Secures parts using clamps, jigs, or machine clamping devices.
• Safety Compliance: Adheres to all site safety protocols, including fume extraction, heat hazard prevention, and proper handling of chemicals.
• Maintenance: Cleans and maintains welding equipment and workstations.

Required Skills & Qualifications
• Experience: 1+ years of experience in plastic fabrication, general welding, or a related industrial assembly role.
• Material Knowledge: Ability to identify common plastics (PVC, Polypropylene, HDPE) vs. non-weldable plastics.
• Manual Dexterity: Steady hands and the ability to control welding speed/heat simultaneously.
• Math/Measuring: Ability to read a tape measure, square, and protractor.
• Physical Stamina: Ability to stand for 8-hour shifts, bend, kneel, and lift up to 25 kgs
• PPE: Must be willing to wear safety glasses, heat-resistant gloves, and a respirator when required.

Preferred (But Not Required)
• Matric certificate/NCV Level 4
• Experience with plastic shears/cutters, plastic pipe heat fusion machinery
• Forklift certification.

Working Conditions
• On-site; may be exposed to moderate noise, heat from tools, and plastic fumes (ventilation provided).
• Occasional overtime or weekend shifts to meet production deadlines.

Compensation
• Hourly market rate commensurate with experience
• Overtime pay as per South African local labour laws.
